Black Activism Past and Present highlights the social justice, educational, intellectual, cultural, and philanthropic contributions of transatlantic Black activists from the nineteenth century to today. Our Nineteenth-Century Activism page spotlights Black activists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Portraits of each individual and brief biographies are accompanied by suggested readings, and an historical timeline places activists’ work together in a visible, interactive manner. Additionally, the Birmingham Activism Today page brings the legacies of nineteenth-century social justice figures into our contemporary moment. This page documents the work in which Birmingham, England community advocacy groups are currently engaged in order to attend to issues of racial equity, anti-racism, antiviolence, and service.
